Japanese flower lovers have been growing this plant since the time of the samurai. It blooms early and the vines are adorned with an abundance of unusual flowers, shaped like a five-pointed star. These ‘stars’ are purple-blue with white outlines, resembling origami, and a pink or yellow throat is in the centre of each. Blooming throughout the summer, Japanese Clematis attracts bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds.
Kikyo-zaki grows on a vine 2.5 to 3 metres long. Each flower opens early in the morning and blooms for only one day, being replaced by fresh flowers each subsequent morning. The plant symbolises fleeting beauty, reflecting the passage of time. As the flowers unfurl at dawn and wither at dusk, they are a silent lesson on the transient nature of life.
This morning glory became the inspiration for a unique jewellery set. Flowers set with yellow and violet-blue tanzanites are at the centre of the composition, mounted in a setting resembling origami. The creepers of the morning glory are set with diamonds while the leaves are decorated with emeralds. Consisting of earrings and a necklace, the entire set was crafted in two-tone gold.
