An adult humpback whale weighs about 30 tonnes, roughly the weight of a fully loaded truck. However, this several metres long whale amazes humans with its agility. Scientists have been particularly intrigued by the ease with which this massive animal manoeuvres in the water, rolling in incredibly tight circles.
It was discovered that the secret lies in the shape of the fins. Their front edge is not smooth, as in the case of aircraft wings, but covered with numerous tubercles. When a humpback whale performs underwater stunts, these tubercles increase lift and reduce water resistance. How does this happen?
When a humpback whale moves, the water envelops the tubercles. As a result, a multitude of eddies forms on the tubercles. This increases the humpback whale's lifting power, enabling it to tilt its fins at a high angle and remain manoeuvrable.
The incredible acrobatics of the humpback whale and its majestic appearance became the inspiration for the creation of this unique ring. The body of the whale is made of solid gold. It is in the process of moving around the owner's finger. The fins and upper jaw are set with black diamonds, symbolising the secret of the mammal's agility.
