Characterised by glossy flowers appearing on leaves protruding from between rocks, this plant is found only in the Himalayas where it grows at altitudes above 3,200m on debris called scree. Typically, only five percent of its seeds reach germination and the plant requires three to five years of growth to reach maturity. In a climate of low temperatures and heavy snow, this flower thrives despite the harsh and difficult conditions.
Saussurea laniceps, also known as snow lotus, is used in traditional Chinese medicine. The increasing demand for these flowers could lead to the extinction of the entire species. Scientists are making efforts to save the snow lotus and other plant species which are endangered due to their popularity.
The perseverance of the snow lotus, whose greatest threat is humans, inspired me to design a unique set of earrings. Pink sapphires are set in the centre of the earrings. The petals are encircled with small diamonds resembling ice crystals. The whole design was made in yellow gold.
