Arctic Ice Ring

Autor: Piotr Zieliński

According to some scientists, we have entered a new geological epoch called the Anthropocene, during which humans have an increasingly noticeable impact on the entire planet. Continued global warming is leading to a situation where the process of ice melt is becoming irreversible. Why is this melting considered irreversible?

The surface of ice reflects the sun's rays. But as its layer shrinks, it exposes the ocean below, which reflects less of these rays. The dark surface of the ocean absorbs more heat, which in turn intensifies melting. This self-perpetuating mechanism is out of control. The predicted rise in ocean levels threatens many animal species, such as emperor penguins and polar bears.

This dramatic situation motivated me to carry out a unique project. On a simple ring stands two figures. The polar bear and the penguin are holding the last ice block, represented by a cobalt blue sapphire. They are trying to protect the last remaining shelter of their environment with their paws. The ring was made in 14k ice gold.
