Scales have long been recognised as a symbol of justice. The biblical Book of Daniel describes how, during a feast, the hand of God inscribed mysterious words on the wall of a Babylonian palace. The inscription was a judgment on the pagan ruler, who had been weighed on a scale and found lacking. Later that same night, Babylon, the capital of the world at that time, was conquered overnight without a fight by Cyrus the Mede.
This profound symbolism inspired the design of the Signet of Justice. In the centre, there is an emerald-cut cognac weighing 5 carats set in a solid gold frame. The sides of the ring are decorated with an engraving of scales. The scales are set on a sword with wings symbolising the imminent judgment on those who have justice for nothing. The lower part of the engraving, on either side of the ring, is crowned with a decorative pin with the owner's initials. The entire piece was made in solid yellow gold.
