The history of eyeglasses dates back to antiquity, although their origins cannot be pinpointed with accuracy. The first references to the use of optical glasses are from China, Egypt, and Mesopotamia, where craftsmen produced 'stones' that could magnify print and thus becoming the prototype of lenses.
The oldest known image of spectacles in Europe is in the Church of St Nicholas in Treviso and depicts Cardinal Hugo da Provenza. It is a fresco dating from 1352 by Thomas of Modena.
In the following centuries, there were many technological improvements. In the 18th century, lenses were introduced for reading and viewing objects at a distance. In the 19th century, people started to use metal frames, and mass production of optical glasses began.
With the development of technology and science, glasses became a tool for vision correction and a fashion accessory. I have long had inquiries about designing and making gold framed spectacles, but only now have we developed a model that has been made based on the customer's research and preferences. It emphasises the style and character of the owner.
I made the temples and bridge of rolled gold. The hinges and nosepieces are cast from specially prepared wax models and then processed on CNC machines. The components are soldered, assembled with gold screws, and polished. According to the customer's prescription, these glasses can be made as sunglasses or corrective glasses.
