Signet ring with tanzanite

Autor: Piotr Zieliński

Tanzanite is a scarce variety of zoisite which, true to its name, is only found in one place on Earth. Its discoverer was Ali Juuyawatu, a native Maasai, who in January 1967 stumbled upon unusual crystals protruding from the ground. The mineral has a unique feature that causes the stone to shimmer with two colours: blue and violet. This optical phenomenon, called pleochroism, is particularly evident in larger crystals.

Tanzanite is still only found in a few square kilometres of Tanzania, near Mount Kilimanjaro. Its price and availability are directly tied to the gradual slowdown in mining in that area.

The stone for this project was mined in Tanzania and subsequently auctioned in Hong Kong. It weighs 8 ct, has an emerald cut, and is an exquisite deep blue-purple colour. With its large surfaces and excellent finish, the effect of pleochroism is further enhanced.

The stone has been set in a solid setting of exotic palladium gold, also known as precious white gold. Floral mantling has been engraved on the sides of the signet ring, revealing a quilted chequered pattern, alluding to the gem’s shape and giving the entire composition a refined elegance.
