Ice ring with sapphire

Ice floats on water. This process is only possible because of a peculiar property of water. As it cools, the water in the seas and lakes becomes heavier. The heavier water displaces the lighter, warmer water and rises upwards. But when the water temperature drops to around 4°C, the process starts to move in the opposite direction.

As it approaches freezing, the water becomes lighter again and stays above the warmer layer before solidifying and turning into ice. Because the ice is lighter than the water below, it remains an insulating layer, protecting the plants and animals that live in it. If it were not for this phenomenon, most of the water in the lakes and even the oceans would, over time, turn into hard ice, resulting in conditions on Earth that would make life impossible.

The astonishing properties of water and ice inspired the creation of a unique ring. The geometric, spatial composition refers to the crystalline form of ice. A blue sapphire is set in the centre. The remaining water molecules, in the form of diamonds, are trapped in hydrogen bonds of white gold. The setting allows the stones to be seen from all sides, as if levitating in the air, revealing the perfect proportions of the cut.
