Brotherly signet rings

Autor: Piotr Zieliński

The word ‘signet’ in Middle Eastern languages derives from a root meaning ‘to seal’. It refers to the use of ancient rings which were imprinted in clay or wax to leave a stamp. These seals, made of gold, silver, or bronze, were sometimes accompanied by a stone engraved with the name or emblem of the owner.

It is not only documents that can be sealed in order to validate authenticity; seals can be a symbol denoting membership to a certain family. Such family emblem rings are a unique type of jewellery. They are not only a means of investment passed down from generation to generation but also affirmation of membership to a particular family. At a time when it is difficult to maintain ties, family signet rings are a wonderful keepsake, reminding us, in every circumstance, of the importance of family.

A set of such rings was commissioned by Mr. Martin. At the centre are rare varieties of moissanite in cognac and blue. Each stone weighs approximately 5 ct. The initials of the owners are engraved on the sides of the setting. The wide rim is decorated with a quilted checkered pattern, with a subtle floral motif. The entire set is crafted in solid 14k gold.
