Shorter days, yellowing leaves, and falling temperatures herald the arrival of autumn. Certain fruits ripen during this unique period when nature quietens down and prepares for the coming winter. One of these is the common plum. Originating in Asia Minor, the plum found its way to Europe during wars and migration. It most likely came to Poland from Hungary, hence its name ‘węgierka’ meaning ‘Hungarian’. The ripe fruit does not fall immediately and may remain on the tree for several days waiting to be picked.
When Mr. Bartłomiej wrote to me asking me to design a jewellery set with oval sapphires, I immediately thought of the plum. The graceful shape of the fruit among the leaves, in the current autumn aura, is a combination which delights the senses. It brings to mind the smell of homemade preserves, the warmth of home, and carefree moments in the last rays of the summer sun.
I started this project by locating the perfect set of stones to match the necklace and earrings. I transferred my idea onto paper for the client's approval. I then began working with the precious metal. The necklace is in the form of an intertwined floral composition with fruit. In the leaves are diamonds and a decorative gallery resembling the letter V. The main sapphire in the necklace is slightly more saturated to highlight the composition's focal point. The whole piece was made in 14k yellow gold.
