Over the centuries, rainwater has seeped deep into ancient underground rocks, carrying dissolved silica with it. Over time, under the influence of geological processes, this silica solidified to form a unique mineral. Today there are only a few places on earth where it can be found. The main mining area is Lightning Ridge in New South Wales, Australia, believed to be the place where the first sample was discovered in 1877. Its phenomenon lies in the specific structure of the microscopic silica particles which have the effect that when light penetrates them, the scattering of rays produces shimmering colours.
Black opal, known as the ‘king of opals’, is one of the most prized gemstones. Its name refers to the play of colours on the black background, resembling a shimmering galaxy. The colours range from blue and purple through green to the most sought after colours, such as yellow and red. These unique hues encapsulated in opal inspired the creation of an exceptional signet ring.
The centre is set with a stone, custom-cut from an almost 7-carat gem. The sides of the ring are decorated with mathematical, deeply engraved patterns. These are also visible inside the signet ring, creating an openwork mosaic. The wide sides of the ring ensure it sits perfectly on the finger. The entire piece has been crafted in solid yellow gold.
