One such trend was the introduction of expressive jewellery with coloured gemstones set in maximalist settings. Rings fit perfectly into these daring yet elegant forms. The richly decorated designs seen on the hands of female cocktail party attendees came to be known as cocktail rings, as women wore them on the hand holding their cocktail to express defiance against Prohibition laws. The cocktail ring symbolised liberation from oppressive regulations.
