When a grain of sand is lodged between the shell and the body of a clam, the mollusk's organism starts to secrete a calcareous substance that hardens around the irritant and builds up successive layers of mother-of-pearl. In this way, in a process that takes several years, a beautiful pearl can be formed. The most expensive gems have a superbly smooth surface and a perfectly spherical shape, subtly shimmering with the different colours of the rainbow.
The most valuable pearls are obtained from pearl oysters living in warm tropical seas, especially from mussels found around Bahrain in the Persian Gulf, the Red Sea and the South China Sea.
The pearl used in this design is 13 mm, with a flawlessly smooth surface and perfect roundness. It is caressed by foaming sea waves set with 120 diamonds totalling over 0.50 ct. The entire piece has been crafted in solid 14k white gold.
